Crystal Clear Brain Waves…

Wait, what was I going to say…it was right here and now it’s running away. The more I try to remember the farther away from my inner librarian it runs. Don’t you hate that? Well, hate is pretty strong, let’s just say it’s frustrating and sometimes unnerving and mostly annoying and maybe even a little worrisome.

The ‘Tip of the Tongue’ syndrome hits all of us sometimes and as we get older the sometimes is more times. I’ve read plenty of medical explanations and, frankly, they don’t help me remember who played 007 in The Spy Who Loved me any faster.

One thing I have found is that ‘trying harder’ is not usually the answer. I end up more frustrated and then I annoy everyone within earshot with, ‘What is his name?” I try looking in different directions, free associating words (oh, that’s making it way worse), scrunching my eye brows into my skull…then, at 2 am I’ll wake up and there it is, Roger Moore.  (Loved him, by the way.)

All that stress on my brain seems to be what’s causing the glitches to happen in the first place. I’ve read that our brains process 4 billion bits of information per second..PER SECOND! Our awareness only grabs on to 2 thousand bits per second…Only?! My calculator doesn’t go up that high, but if it could calculate how many bits of information my brain has stuffed in there in my lifetime so far it would be in the Holy Crap range!

It’s no wonder I have a little trouble getting my inner librarian to pull out the right book and page sometimes. But, something I’ve found that helps her find all those gazillion bits of info better is giving her a vacation, letting her stretch out on a white sandy beach, lounge in the sun and forget all about me and my incessant remembering.

Mindfulness, meditation, quiet time, whatever you want to call it, I find it helps. Get out of your head by going into your head, and that gets you out of your head.

Turn off the outside noise, put down the electronics, get comfortable and focus on your breath, or a candle flame, or saying Om. Keep it simple. When a thought, or 5 million, waft across your brain, without any fuss at all, gently bring your attention back to your single focus. Start small, a few minutes and build up to a half hour or more.

Do this and then tell me how your ‘Tip of the Tongue Syndrome’ is, how your overall peacefulness and serenity is, how your focus is, how your compassion is, how your patience is. It’s such a simple thing, a habit you can create that’s just for you, like a bubble bath for your brain…but, it will positively impact everything you do and everyone you touch.

I gotta go now, it’s meditation time and today’s mantra is ‘Pizza”.
