Word of the Day…Balance

Are you living in balance? No, I’m not asking if you balance your work and home life, or if you balance your checkbook, not even if you balance your emotions. I’m asking a deeper question, I’m asking if you live in balance with your authentic self.

Did you even know that you had an authentic self? Don’t feel bad, many people aren’t aware that they’re allowed to have an authentic self. Thinking of that hurts my heart.

Your authentic self is the real you, the you without ‘borrowed beliefs’ and ‘shoulds’ and ‘can’ts’. All of these are things other people have given us and we accepted as our own even though they really don’t belong to us. They color every choice we make, every belief we have, every idea we hold of ourselves and others.

When we live in balance we give back every thing that does not reflect our true self and we live as our authentic self, the self we would have been without all that guilt and shame and fear. People close to us, people who care about us, share their guilt and shame and fear with us to ‘help’ us in our lives. We can’t blame them, they were taught these things by the people who love them. Heck, we pass along these things to the ones we love, too, because that’s what we learned and that’s what we know to do.

This doesn’t mean that we’re stuck with all of that ‘fake self’ stuff. Take some time to notice how many times you think or say ‘should’ or ‘can’t’ or ‘I believe’ and decide if you Really Agree. If not, send it back to the person who gave it to you with appreciation for their caring and concern, but it doesn’t belong to you.

If  no one else has told you, let me be the first – You have the right to live an authentic life as your true authentic self, a right to feel whole.
