I Belief You…

I recently had a bit of an unnerving experience. I consider myself to be fairly level, balanced, understanding and accepting of others, but the other day I read something that really shook me up to my core. A person I’ve known since my childhood posted something controversial on Facebook that was totally out of character for who I’ve known her to be and I was completely flabbergasted.

Why, you ask? I had no idea – so, that means I had some digging to do. (I always need to know why.)

I started by looking at beliefs and where they come from.

It’s been my experience from the many sessions and readings I’ve had with all types of people, and in my own life, beliefs come from our past experiences. Everything we’ve personally experienced, read, been told, seen on TV and in movies, seen or heard other people’s experiences are all amassed in our psyche and then become a part of our ego association, our personality. We hold our personalities to be who we actually are, to be the essence of ourselves. I even just stated that my childhood friend’s controversial comment wasn’t in line with ‘who she is”, as if it were fact.

None of us are immune to the idea that our beliefs are who we are, however, this is not true at all. What is true is that we will conduct ourselves as if it is true and everything we think, see, feel and hear will be colored by these beliefs.

It’s as if we are wearing belief colored glasses.

Who we really are is energy, pure potentiality. Some call this energy Love, some call it God energy, some call it our Spirit, but, no matter what you call it – it is not our beliefs. This essence that is us is never changing, it always is what it is. In contrast, our beliefs are in a state of perpetual change.

There are those who will disagree and say they have always held the same belief about a particular thing, however, if you challenge them to dissect their belief of then and of now they’ll see there have been changes. They may hold the same overall belief, but there will be some aspects that are not exact. Since we are constantly having new experiences and experiences create beliefs they can’t help but change.

In the moment I read that Facebook post I was acting from a place of beliefs and not from my true self. My true, spirit self has no opinion and is non judgmental, my personality belief self is a work in progress on that subject.

My personality self saw that moment as making one of my beliefs wrong.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but I have been holding a belief that people who have shared their vulnerability and openness with me in a friendship or personal level have the same beliefs about people and humanity as I do.

My ego made it a personal attack to me when I saw it was not true.

Uncovering this belief and seeing clearly how my ego personality self reacted clears up so much, not just about me, but about what’s going on when people disagree on religion, politics, etc.

This perceived attack was nothing more than another person acting from their collection of experiences.

I’m grateful to have the understanding that no matter how evolved anyone becomes, if we are still here in body form we have an ego personalty self and we will continue to learn and grow, even when we thought we had already learned that lesson.

For me, these uncomfortable times offer a chance to not only learn more about myself, but also to learn more about relating to and understanding others.
