Word of the Day…Playfulness

The first rule of Happiness is…

You’re Allowed to Be Silly, to Have Fun, to Be Playful!!

A great definition of playfulness is ‘to engage in activity for the sheer enjoyment of it‘

Let your inner Three Year Old out to play – they don’t care if they’re too loud, too silly, too weird looking…they haven’t learned to sensor every thing they do and say to fit into the box other people have decided is ‘the right behavior’ to fit into nicely with society yet.

I’m not suggesting you go out and deliberately be as obnoxious as possible to annoy other people…but I am encouraging you to let your inner child out to:

  1. Wear something that makes you feel happy regardless if it clashes, if it’s too bright, if it isn’t age appropriate
  2. Swing on the swings
  3. Instead of going for a run go out skipping
  4. Get messy, get sand in your shoes or better yet, take off your shoes
  5. Play games just for the fun of it…it doesn’t matter who wins, and don’t forget some lighthearted trash talking
  6. Make new instant friends, compliment someone to start the conversation
  7. Laugh, giggle, chuckle..a lot

If you’re brave you can make playfulness a way of living. Look for the fun in the simplest of things, stay lighthearted and open hearted, allow other’s they’re opinions (which have nothing to do with you and everything to do with what they’ve been taught) and above all SMILE A LOT!

All of this silliness isn’t just a distraction from everyday life, playfulness is a natural reset button for your body’s chemistry by

  • Decreasing cortisol
  • Increasing endorphins
  • Releasing dopamine
  • Boosting oxytocin
  • Regulating serotonin
  • Creating brain neuroplasticity
  • Boosting immune system responses

It also helps foster empathy, cooperation, and deeper interpersonal bonds and so much more.

So get out there and be playful for your health…and you might just start a trend of fun times and better health
